Rachmaninoff composed the All-Night Vigil in less than two weeks in January and February 1915. The All-Night Vigil is perhaps notable as one of two liturgical settings (the other being the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom) by a composer who had stopped attending church services. Rachmaninoff's Vespers are a gift to the world, and this CD allows the world to enjoy them in their full majesty. Make sure to add this to your library. Rachmaninov 's greatest work -- his most exalted, profound, and spiritual work -- just might be his Vespers. Freed from the demands of piano virtuosity and the requirements of orchestral color and -- most importantly -- from the bounds and bonds of the emotional and the sensual, Rachmaninov was able to compose pure music.

I cannot speak to the musical merits of this particular recording, and others here have done a nice job of that anyway. Basically, you have to sing the final scale of the fifth movement of Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil (otherwise known as his Vespers).
